Breaking The Waves

This weeks feature on

Band:
Ingested

Location:
Manchester, England

Formed:
2004

If you’ve ventured out to a heavy metal show at some point in the last year, you can’t have failed to notice Ingested somewhere on the bill. They have a habit of leaving more carnage and destruction in their wake then when Millwall FC fans were last on the march with their Cannibal Corpse meets Hatebreed style of audience destroying noise. Vocalist Jay Evans gives Soundshock the lowdown on their brutal craft.

First of all, who does what in your band?
I do vocals, Sean and Sam are the guitars, Brad is bass and Lyn on drums.

Where are you from?
All of us are from Manchester except Lyn, who is Welsh but lives in Shrewsbury.

How long you been together?
Well we originally started off as a grindcore band called Age Of Suffering around 2004, but when Lyn joined in 2006 we decided to take a heavier, more brutal style and took the name Ingested.

Who are your main inspirations for Ingested?
Oh God, there's so many! Mainly Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Nile, Despised Icon, Whitechapel, Pantera, Hatebreed, Beheaded. But we're all influenced by different stuff, Lyn's really into power metal, Sam loves Dubstep, I really like hip hop, it's just a mish mash of all different musical styles that mesh together when we write.

What do you think makes Ingested stand out?
I dunno really, we just love to play heavy as fuck music! If I had to pick one thing though, I'd probably say Lyn. He's a fucking insane drummer. He's just too fucking fast! Hahaha!

I’ve seen you live a few times, and you’re been none less than fucking brutal. How important is the live experience for you?
Haha thanks! But yeah playing live is the most important. It's also the most fun too, getting two to four weeks where you know you've got a show every night is awesome! You get to meet new people, old friends and just chill out and have a laugh after or before the show. Seeing other people enjoy something we've created is the very best part. It feels unbelievable!

Just how do you come up with such disgusting song titles?
Haha, I just think: “what's the worst thing I can think of? Ah, that'll do!” I used to watch a lot of horror films, so I've got a DVD collection that's basically a back catalogue of the past 25 years of horror films, I got a lot of inspiration from that DVD cabinet!

How’s the positive reception to ‘Surpassing the Boundaries of Human Suffering’ felt?
In a word, shocking. We never thought we'd get such praise for our second or third attempts nevermind our first! Just seeing it in the magazines we read to see what's new in the metal scene and reading all the good things they said about 'Surpassing…' was fucking incredible! We just wanna top that now!

What’s next for Ingested?
Well we've got our headline tour 'Cremating The U.K' starting off at Ghostfest in Leeds on 27th June then hopefully some more shows and tours, maybe hitting some festivals and recording our follow up album before the year is out!

Finally, is there anyone you want to thank?
First off, thanks to you guys for the interview and to our friend Anna, but most of all the people reading this who come out to shows or support our band in any way, you know who you are and we couldn't do what we do without you, cheers!
