| Breaking The Waves - Spires |
For those of you disappointed by Opeth’s ‘Heritage’ – and if you are, why in the holy name of Akerfeldt why? – Manchester based Spires are here to keep your tastebuds tingling in death metal prog delight. Their 2010 release ‘Spiral of Ascension’ is a hydra-head beast that sinuously weaves through Emperor meets Opeth orchestrated intensity on ‘The Infinite Descent’ through to breezy Cynic energy on ‘Broken Hourglass’ (which you can see below), and a whole lot of others in-between. As each lavish track unfurls, you’d swear they’d been at this for years. And you’d be right. Vocalist and guitarist Paul Sadler has held the conception of Spires in his head since 2005: “As a full band we’ve been together since early 2008, so not far off four years now. We then started gigging later that year. However as a concept Spires has been around quite a while longer; a couple of the songs on ‘Spiral of Ascension’ were written back in ‘2005, and we then gradually started to collect members to make the band a reality, so there’s quite a history to the album!” While none of his previous bands made it past the “Myspace stage”, Spires is more clearly driven by Paul’s expansive ambitions. “I was never really that much of a creative force in my previous bands, so it gave me a determination to take the music into my own hands,” says Paul. “And create the vision that I had subconsciously been dreaming of for some time.” And now those dreams have become reality, having just completed a UK tour with fellow Mancs Incassum. With rave reviews across the board, Spires look set to ascend even greater heights.
