Ash Pool – For Which He Plies The Lash

Holocaust Temple
A Sacrifice Consumed by Fire
Big Bang Black Metal
Porcelain Cancer Spear
White Dwarf Death Mask
Dancing Death Masters
Moon Rose Over Sobibor
On the Rings of Saturn Adam and Eve Conceive Cain

Reading the lyrics for ‘Holocaust Temple’ and listening to the music, you may very well come to the conclusion that the minds behind Ash Pool are either having the time of their lives or are completely barking mad. It certainly keeps this American twosome so invigorating.

A few years on from ‘World Turns On Its Hinge’, Ash Pool vomit forth another blackened slice of metal. As a black metal, they present a contrast to the likes of Wolves In The Throne Room, substituting mysticism for something that sounds like the results of a particularly unwise decision to let David Copeland write Cannibal Corpse lyrics.

Music-wise, once you get past the standard issue treble-heavy production, you quickly realise this is a multi-talented metal band simply slumming it: ‘Big Bang Black Metal’ has a classic thrash riff that will be recognisable to anyone who has been near a Municipal Waste CD at any point in their lives. ‘Dancing Death Masters’ is pure black metal all the way through, but with albeit with some interesting fret play that keeps you on your toes as the riffs shimmies about from the speakers.

Granted, there’s nothing particularly original about Ash Pool, although there is a grim smile that plays on the lips when they shamelessly drop in some organ chords on the closing tracks. Perhaps it’s just the fact that they permit their production to be a little more slick than their peers. Crazy talk indeed.
