Estonian kook, Evestus, is back with his third release ‘This Is Dramacore’ and with a vicious intent to surpass the stagnant artistry that seems to infest the current industrial scene. Riddled in bitterness, angst and hopeless torment – with this record, Evestus leads his victims unto a carousel, taunting them to question their stale stench of deficiencies and ignorance.
Alongside a musical melange of experimentation, much of the material on the album depicts a somewhat dark take on life, tinting innocence with irony (take ‘All the Kings Drugs’ with its macabre nursery haunt, for example). There is also a bizarrely affective, almost emotive fairground sound that permeates many of the tracks, adding to the unique twinges it accomplishes.
Regardless of being charged with total ingenuity and mixed to perfection, the album does prove difficult to swallow and unfolds as merely an attempt to outdo counterparts – which, although is certainly achieved, leaves an almost hollow listening experience. Parts of the album do grate and seem to lose direction, posing the question of whether this is too steered towards feeding an egotistical pretence, rather than creating a lasting, genuine impression.
