A band member from a well renowned group is always an issue with a newer band, as many will make comparisons between the two. But with Order of Ennead, it is fair to say that Deicide drummer Steve Asheim has clearly stayed in his comfort zone, of producing decent death metal. One difference here though is that second album ‘An Examination of Being’ has a slightly blackened edge to it, with more raspy vocals that appear to have swam over to Florida from the Scandinavian snow.

And unlike a lot of black and death blending bands, Order of Ennead still manage to retain melodic riffs with brutality in a way that continues to geographically confuse you. Despite such a plethora of techniques and influences, this album manages to play in a fluent manner with only a few complicated changeovers.

The flow of the album however does not hide the fact that the thirty nine minutes of record seem to bumble along towards the end, structurally falling in and out of your head, which perhaps takes away the success of the talent caught on this album.

In conclusion, this instalment from Asheim is something to be enjoyed as an individual band and album and not a comparison to its predecessors, as it has nothing on such classics as Dissection. For a Floridian group to create music so grim is an achievement in itself and OoE have the potential to continue.
