'Solitaire' is the new album from Austrian symphonic metallers, Edenbridge.  ‘Higher’ and ‘Out of This World’ are excellent tracks with some really impressive drum and guitar work. The same can be said for a few others on the album and singer, Sabine Edelsbacher, generally produces great vocal performances, which adds to the sophistication and quality of the album. Unfortunately, there are also quite a few duds scattered across this record which nudges the quality back down a bit. The main reason for this, is that there is quite a distinct lack of variation on the album, and one gets the feeling that they aren’t taking any risks to mix it up with a few different techniques, which could have made it much more interesting and appeal to a wider audience.

Although some new elements on this album are very good, it’s hard to think that someone could prefer Edenbridge to some bands such as ‘Nightwish’ and ‘Within Temptation’. These guys are far more capable of producing strong symphonic records that will be remembered for a long time. Edenbridge, however, don’t seem to have found the right formula for doing this. 'Solitaire' is their seventh album and throughout the band’s ten year history, they have remained in the shadows of these bigger, more experienced bands and it looks like this is
where they will stay, no matter how hard they try.
