Grand Magus are more metal than you, and ‘Hammer Of The North’ is a more metal album than yours. Far from the gung ho and good fun but borderline gimmickry of many of the so-called “New Wave Of Trad Metal” lot, Messrs JB, Fox and SEB ply their trade in far doomier waters, with 2008’s particularly outstanding ‘Iron Will’ serving as one of the year’s best releases. Fast forward two years, and ‘Hammer Of The North’ is more of the same, with tracks such as galloping anthem ‘Northern Star’ and epic album opener ‘I, The Jury’ injecting some much-welcome pace into proceedings. Many were surprised to see the Magus jump ship to Roadrunner, but if it means that music as stirring and heavy as this reaches the kind of audience that it deserves, only good things can come. Hail!
