Lifeless’ logo screams with common traits of death metal, so at least there is no false advertising as far as their debut is concerned. They describe themselves quite aptly as “traditional death metal”, and ‘Beyond the Threshold of Death’ could somewhat be seen as an Obituary or Death tribute, but at least it shows that Lifeless have done their homework, especially in creating a well structured record, that flows evenly through aggression and melody. Despite the old school traits continuing throughout ‘Beyond the Threshold...’, each song is catchy enough to disguise the fact every riff could be played by a novice.
‘Retaliation’ shows Lifeless’ more melodic side, while the rest of the album continues to punch you in the face with agony and anger, back into the past of death metal greatness. It’s unlike Germany to produce such traditional brutality, but clearly there isn’t much inspiration for originality, the main thing that lacks in this album. Lifeless have all the energy necessary for a decent death metal band, but new ideas definitely do not shine through in this album. As a death metal fan, it’s another band you are guaranteed to like, but don’t expect anything jaw dropping.
