Venom

Venom – Fallen Angels (4)

Go back to 1979 – Venom had just started out and were a major influential force on the thrash scene.  Highly controversial and considered by many as ‘Satanic’, this band were years ahead of their time, perhaps even slightly progressive for the thrash genre.

Now fast forward to 2011.  Bands such as Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust are tearing thrash metal a new arsehole and the concept of Venom’s music seems incredibly dated.  ‘Fallen Angels’ shows Cronos and the gang falling victim to the past times, giving songs cheesy titles such as ‘Sin’ and ‘Hail Satanas’.  What was admirable in the 80’s is now laughed upon.  The Tyneside metallers have failed to bring their sound up to date and make it more accessible to people in a modern age.  Bands like Anthrax and Megadeth have withstood the test of time with forward-thinking mentalities and an awareness of their musical surroundings.  Sadly Venom don't join them.

‘Lest We Forget’ is the best track on the album – it’s instrumental and beautifully composed.  The rest of the songs tend to merge together and sound very much the same as every other Venom album there has ever been.  This may work for die-hard fans that have been with the band since the beginning and have no wish to uproot themselves from the past.  However, for people with a more sophisticated pallet of tastes – you’d do well to give this one a miss.
