THE MAN-EATING TREE – HARVEST (9)
The Man-Eating Tree might have a strange name, but they have one hell of a line-up, featuring former members of Poison Black and the legendary Sentenced.
‘Harvest Bell’ opens, gracefully introducing ‘At The Green Country Chapel’ – a beautiful and riveting track which quite frankly, makes you glad to be alive. There are shades of doom flowing around the whole record, without being depressive. In fact, at times it’s actually catchy – ‘Armed’ will dig its way into the brain and stay there for some time. Tuomas Touimnen’s vocals are effortlessly powerful, pulling the listener in with ease and there are some truly glorious moments brought to the fore by the combination of guitars and keyboards. The whole band clearly works well together and creates an incredibly accomplished sound despite only being together since 2009. The Man-Eating Tree is yet another band that proves Finland to be a veritable goldmine of wonderful music.
‘Harvest’ is atmospheric rather than aggressive so don’t expect much in the way of rough vocals, but it has enough force to be a very satisfying listen. This album can’t really be pigeon holed. It is that rare beast – a genuine slab of good old fashioned heavy rock, executed in an intelligent and moving way with a dark and pleasing grace.
