DECAYING – DEVASTATE (6)

It seems the resurrection of death metal has managed to be sustained through this year with renowned acts like Autopsy and Vader releasing absolute belters, while debuts from bands like Sonne Adam have proven that even the fresher flesh can create something worth growling about.  With this in mind Finnish youngsters Decaying have done a pretty decent job of getting acceptance in the big boys’ gang with this debut.

In a similar style to aforementioned Sonne Adam, ‘Devastate’ bleeds with old school dirtiness.  However whether or not this is intentional is another story, as these tracks were previously demos and perhaps not cleaned up.  There is also a doom infused aspect which adds a darker feel to the guttural vocals and war influenced lyrics.  Being described as death metal, it’s surprising to see the album is six tracks long and many of these are around the ten minute mark.  But this gives the guitarists an opportunity to shine with more technicalities, the tempo dropping and falling into evil abysses.

Unfortunately for Decaying, there is some sloppiness throughout, particularly on percussion and although this rough around the edges approach may appeal to more underground specialists, you cannot deny that the band lacks in talent compared to its peers.  The beginning and end of the album are as devastating as the title states, however it’s the filling in this death metal sandwich that lets it down.  There is certainly Room for improvement so keep a bloodshot eye out.
