LORD MANTIS - PERVERTOR (7)

‘Blackened sludge’ is the way Lord Mantis describe themselves and pretty much sums up what they are all about. High-pitched vocals but riffs that feel like someone unsuccessfully attempting to wade through mud.

Despite hitting a rather Dani Filth-esque pitch throughout, the bloodcurdling shrieks featured here make for an excellent fit alongside 'Pervertor's' high, trebly fits of distortion. When things come together on this album they work really well, with the best example of this being ‘Ritual Killer,’ which has a main riff that has such a deep, stoner feel to it that even Crowbar would have been proud to have written it. It is an album of contrasts, as following that track things suddenly take a fast and furious turn with ‘At the Mouth.’ Imagine if Iron Monkey had done a sideline in black metal and you’ll get the idea!

Certainly an interesting listen that is probably more of a grower as there is so much going on from track to track. It’s certainly very unique and shows that genres can easily be mixed up successfully with just a little imagination.
