On a normal night it would seem crazy for 300 people to be descending upon the Purple Turtle in Camden Town. However, this is no normal night; it’s the first time that American band, Yob, will be playing London and sludge enthusiasts are out in full force.

Dead Existence open the show; their performance is somewhat overshadowed by the Japanese horror movie they are using as backing graphics; attempted rape with a drill and tubes flying out of people are a tad unsettling to say the least. The vocals sound akin to Klas Rydberg of Cult of Luna and the guitars are crushing, if you take care to pay attention.

Swedish doom trio, Kongh are superb! Faithful supporters of Yob throughout their European tour, they are on top form tonight and bring an enthusiasm onto the stage with them which proves to be infectious and surges through the crowd like a roll of thunder. Despite admitting to the crowd that they are “drunk” it does not show – a truly faultless set.

Is there a female conspiracy to take over the sludge genre? It would seem so, first Laura Pleasants of Kylesa and now Stevie Floyd of Dark Castle. The two-piece have also been a permanent fixture of the tour and they massacre the crowd; making the need for a bassist or any other band members totally redundant. If they can produce masterpieces such as ‘Surrender To All Life Beyond Form’ with only two members why are other bands even bothering?

Yob greet their audience with a humble grace that proves they are just as happy to be here as everyone stood watching. They play tracks from the new release ‘Atma’ as well as classics such as ‘Ball of Molten Lead’. Their set is a generous hour and a half long and uncompromisingly heavy. The crowd is heaving, the atmosphere is intense and it’s certain that anyone daring enough to stand near the speakers is having their face blown off – lucky fuckers! Yob have left a hand print on the arse of the Purple Turtle which is going to take a few weeks to fade.
