Septic Flesh enter the stage greeted by a venue already crowded with people full of beer and sporting the now obligatory plastic viking helmets. Their breed of symphonic death metal gets the night off to a good start, with frontman Spiros Antoniou’s roars commanding the crowd into a early frenzy. For a band that not often graces our shores, they storm through their set as if they play here on a regular basis.
Next up are As I Lay Dying, the odd one out in this line-up consisting of two Death Metal bands from Greece and Sweden. Safe to say the metalcore band from California weren’t high on a lot of the attendees list of bands to see. That soon changes, to the point where even the viking clad men that were just 10 minutes ago booing are now thrashing their heads as if this was the band they’d come to see. These group of men from the sunny side of America certainly know how to win over a crowd when all is against them.
Amon Amarth arrive on stage, Johan Hegg towering over the front rows as roars echo throughout the room...this crowd is now under his command. Playing through their back catalogue of 8 albums, it’s definitely clear the earlier efforts are the fans favourites tonight, with ‘The Pursuit of Vikings’ receiving the greatest reception. Even though Amon Amarth are noticeably not at their best tonight, with even their usual synchronised ‘windmilling’ lacking slightly, they play through a decent set and an all round solid performance. |
