As opening acts go, local lads Ten Cent Toy are an obvious choice to bring up the enthusiasm levels of tonight’s wide demographic. They might be tad over-indulgent with the superfluous off-beat but are achingly close to tapping the vein of their very own niche that you can’t help but see the potential.

The lack of on-stage amplfication isn’t the only thing that is off-kilter about Neosis; the younger members of tonight’s audience press against the front of Bogiez’ deceptively small stage and are greeted with a bitingly tuned mix of ice-cold industrial with a kicker of searing djent that would have Scandinavia’s finest wishing that they had taken that step first. Stylistically faultless and rhythmically dazzling, every dutifully performed flurry is met with devil horns; it just seems such reaction does not quite match the intelligent, passionate quality that Neosis convey. Bloomin’ marvellous.

Peter Tagtgren hobby-project PAIN come in riding the wave of nostalgia to the delight of both those who are obviously members of the Hypocrisy brigade as well as those who like things a little simpler. However, it isn’t long before the wave collides with the breakwater and it crashes in to the rocks. With electronic titbits that ache with archaic charm and drum loops that saw their predecessors safely through the early nineties, PAIN just sound dated with every track on the set-list seemingly a subtle mutation of the one before. Obviously to the joy the older demographic, those who lapped up the bands earlier on in the bill are not alone in wondering just how the hysteria for this band crept up to the fever pitch that was witnessed at the height of tonight’s headline set. This is obviously one for those clinging to the past, but it’s not something that would make you risk missing the last bus for, even if Tagtgen is wearing a grubby, straight-jacket.
